Festival Mata Air 2016

O ya, temanya tahun ini adalah “Our Water, Our Future”.

Bravo, sampai jumpa tahun depan! :)

Merkaba geometry tattoo

The Star Tetrahedron, better known as the Merkaba, is comprised of 2 opposing tetrahedrons that are spinning in opposite directions.

In ancient Egypt, the word Merkaba referred to a rotating light that would take the spirit and the body from one world into another. In Hebrew it means chariot of God. In the Bible it is the way Ezekiel ascended into Heaven.

The design itself is one of many sacred geometry or sacred patterns used in the design or everything in our reality, most often in sacred architecture and sacred art (like tattoos!). Tattoo done by Dimas Praja

#CDTS Chalk art fusion at Prodjo's Warung Yogya

This time, Dimas got an honor to draw on a huge chalkboard displayed at Prodjo's Warung. Tattoo Day @ Porx Park #1

On Saturday, March 30, 2012, CarpeDiem TattooStudio was invited by Patub Porx to participate in "Tattoo Day", a part of his solo drawing exhibition, "Porx Park #1" which was held in Asmara Art & Coffee Shop, Jl. Tirtodipuran no. 22, Yogyakarta.

This time, Dimas Praja designed Javanese traditional flower carving with a Hamsa or Hand of Fatima symbol on its center. With pointilism or dotwork technique, Dimas didn't work with tattoo machine, but with 'handpoking' instead. Because it would take longer to finish (we only given 2-3 hours for the workshop), the outlining was done in the studio few days before the workshop.

Pointilism or dot work needs more austerity, and with handpoking technique, the work-length will span more than tattoos done by machine. The tattoo hasn't finished yet, but according to "Tattoo Day" workshop goal, Dimas introduced one of so many tattooing techniques, which might rarely seen by some audiences who attend the workshop.

Modern Tattoo Culture, Semarang, Feb 26-27, 2011

It’s been a week since the event, but the euphoria still goes on…

Around 20 tattoo studios from all over Java island gathered in Dafam Hotel, Semarang for this event held by STAR (Semarang Tattoo Artists). CarpeDiem TattooFamily were roadtripping again! Rory was coming along, wanted to join the tattoo contest; and Rio/Koplo from Rejeki Tattoo and his partner, Fredy, too. Rio’s home is in Banyumanik, it’s about 30minutes from the venue, so we stayed there. His family is super nice! Thanks a lot for his parents and twin brothers for letting us stayed for 2 nights there :)

First day – Feb 26, 2011

The first day, Feb 26, was quite quiet. The first show was the pairs of canine fitting on Hendro Dewisurah; then our beloved host, Mr. Freddy Mock, collaborated with Hendro, tattooed Putche’s back. Some tattooists friends were tattooing their customers, while some others prepared for the tattoo war on the next day, or still hanging out and say hi to each other. This event is only a day after Magic Ink’s tattoo event (Magic Wave’s anniversary) in Bali, so obviously there were lotsa chit-chats about the event here and there :)

lunch time! Soto Lamongan :)

Lois and Rory. Sketching everywhere :)

Then around 7.30 PM, the extreme tattoo performance begun. Every booth sent one of their tattooists to tattoo one model. The main imagery is a star, to represent STAR (Semarang Tattoo Artists). With various tattooists, there would be various style of stars. If there were 20 booths, there would be 20 tattooists at once, but since some tattooists were still tattooing on their booths, not everyone participated. But with 12 tattooists, it’s still a gangbang ;)

Friends were everywhere, old and new. Ucha, the president of Indonesian Sub Culture (ISC) sang Soldier of Fortune for the rest of us who still stayed in venue after the first day’s over.

Second day – Feb 27, 2011

It was the day for Tattoo War and Tattoo Contests. From the start of the event, everyone’s busy preparing designs for the tattoo war.

Dimas Praja preparing the design

few minutes to the tattoo war, guys!

Dimas Praja was doing a dragon-koi tattoo on Fredy Nurdiansyah’s leg. Five hours in fact is not enough to finish the tattoo perfectly, but shortly Dimas Praja won the second place (runner up) for the Oriental category. Congratulations, Dimas! :)

the dragon-koi, still half-way to go, 2nd place at best oriental category :)

congratulations! :)

The trophies....and yaaayyyy CarpeDiem got one! :D

There were tattoo contests too. One of the contests was Queen of Tattoo, for a lady who has the best back piece tattoo. And the Queen is Mrs. Mock! She’s a beautiful, charming lady, and she deserves to be a queen :)

the Queen of Tattoo :)

Lois with Mr. and Mrs. Freddy Mock. They're the sweetest couple in every tattoo show ;)

Dimas and Mr. Freddy Mock

So, after every trophy and certificate went to the owners, the event finished. That’s wrap! And then it’s time to relax a bit and had some fun! :)

in front of Dafam Hotel, the venue

in Tugu Muda park, Semarang

We planned to have the after party in Lawang Sewu. Lol. For anyone who don’t know what place it is, it’s one of the scariest old buildings in Java island (or Indonesia, maybe?). We arrived there at 10PM, but the guard said the gate won’t open for visitors til 1AM (duh!) so we decided to wait til 1AM inTugu Muda park, across Lawang Sewu.

It’s fun to meet old friends, and finding new friends! Equal in passion of art, and having the equal pride in tattooing! See you in the next event! :)

PS. We picked random pictures from our own collection (CarpeDiem TattooStudio), Mock Tato, and Cindy Bond dJAP. There are tons more pictures on their facebook account.. Thank you! :)

A Simple Anniversary

Our anniversary was on November 3, and it's the 4th :) we don't bother making invitations because this year we want it simple and silent. 'Four years' is a short time, compared to the so many other tattooists and established tattoo studios in our town, but we're still standing now, supporting each other and is willing to make art to the fullest every single day.

So many up and downs, positive and negative comments, and we can't say anything more than thank you, because it's all bring the best out of us. For all collectors, supporting friends, and most of all - family.

back in 2009 at Kimochi Fest, Duta Wacana Christian University, Yogyakarta.
in between henna tattoo sessions, these children from the next booth asked lots of things about tattoos.

in 2010, Dimas Praja got a chance to do tattoo at Fourspeed Metalwerks, Bandung.
Anyway, today is their anniversary. happy anniversary, Fourspeed Metalwerks! :)

in summer 2011 Dimas Praja got a chance to do some guest spots in some tattoo studios in Bali.

also in 2011, Dimas Praja got 2nd place for oriental category in Modern Tattoo Culture's tattoo war.
the event was held in Semarang. Here's a link about the event.

our simple celebration at the waiting room. Beer for the guys and orange juice for Lois and Bebe.
Lois made a pile of chocolate doughnuts. The guy in hat is mas Bejo (he was featured once here) which is now helping us a lot at the studio, and next to him is Rory, one of our avid collectors (his favorite is Japanese tattoos, which is one of Dimas' natural talent to design). Here is one of Rory's collections, tattooed by Dimas Praja

Now that we have two tattooists working, we need spare machines :)

and a lot of colors to keep the tattooists' creativity flowin'

Thank you collectors for trusting your skin to us, spreading the good words n everything.
Thank you CarpeDiem TattooStudio family to keep up the good work, pushing the art boundaries, n to keep up the standard :)
cheers!

Philosophy of Semar

Semar is a character in Javanese mythology who frequently appears in wayang shadow plays. He is one of the punakawan (wayang clowns), but is in fact divine and very wise. He is the dhanyang (guardian spirit) of Java, and is regarded by some as the most sacred figure of the kotak (wayang set). He is said to be the god Sang Hyang Ismaya in human form.

The name Semar is said to derive from the Javanese word samar ('dim, obscure, mysterious'). He is often referred to with the honorific, "Kyai Lurah Semar" (the venerable chief).

The philosophy of Semar calligraphy

Philosophy of Semar:
"Bojo sira arsa Mardi kamardikan, aja samar sumingkiring dur-kamurkan Mardika, ora kebanda ing kadonyan, ora samar marang bisane sirna durka murkamu"

which means the freedom of soul; a condition unconquered by lust and mortal life desire, to remain perfectly 'innocent' til death, to restrain temptation and convert it into a power towards perfection in life.

Legong Dancer Tattoo

Legong is a form of Balinese dance; a refined dance form characterized by intricate finger movements, complicated footwork, and expressive gestures and facial expressions.

At first, the client came to us, bringing a magazine with a pair of Legong dancer paintings on it. They are beautiful paintings, indeed, but in the picture, they're hanging on the wall decorating a cozy living room (yes, it's an interior design magazine). Imagine how small it is! To get more details on the dancer's flower crown and facial expression, we browsed through the web and find this beautiful photograph by Mr. Pius Lee.

Eyeing (Legong Dance II), taken on May 30, 2009 by Mr Pius Lee, www.dailytravelphotos.com

Mr Pius Lee began his quest to backpack around the world in 2003. Travel and photography is two of his greatest passions. His website, www.dailytravelphotos.com contains his photography works during traveling, hopefully to relate the beauty and uniqueness of far-away countries that most viewers won't experience first hand.

We can support his cause this way (quoting from his website): "Daily Travel Photos is supported primarily by advertisements. To help ensure the site's survival, I request that you occasionally glance at the ads and clickonly on an advertisement that genuinely interests you. Clicking haphazardly on ads helps nobody in the long run. "

thanks Mr Pius Lee for the beautiful photograph as a great reference, and for visiting Indonesia, too! :)

One day on June, we got Mr Marthin,  a guest from Jakarta, who already booked the slot to be tattooed by Dimas Praja a week before he came to Jogjakarta. He wanted a red lion, inside his ‘torn’ flesh. He also mentioned some letterings to be added, but hadn’t send the design until the day. It was Hebrew lettering, completed the Lion of Judah.

Tibetan Skull Tattoo

Tibetan skulls are getting more attention on tattoo designs, either for its macabre (yet beautiful) look in black-and-grey and color works, and for the meaning itself.

It's also known as kapala (Sanskrit for "skull") or skullcup, it is made from a human skull used as a ritual implement (bowl) in both Hindu Tantra and Buddhist Tantra (Vajrayana). Especially in Tibet, these skulls often carved or elaborately mounted with precious metals and jewels. The heavily embossed cup is usually made of silver-gilt bronze with lid shaped like a skull and with a handle made in the form of a thunderbolt.

And the design development from the idea of Tibetan skull is vary, including on Dimas Praja's tattoo work:
